The NYS Education Department has set the 7 th grade curriculum as the first part of a complete study of United States history. The course begins with the European and Native American roots of Colonial America and continues through the economic, political, intellectual, cultural and military development of the nation through the Civil War. The development and/or reinforcement of skills such as writing, reading, research, and document analysis are emphasized. This course will focus on conceptual understanding, fostering student inquiry, collaboration, and informed action and integrating content and skills purposefully as outlined in the Social Studies Framework. The curriculum is focused on instructional and assessment strategies reflected in the New York State Social Studies Framework, inquiry approach, and historical thinking skills. The examination of historical themes and trends are also examined in this course.
