The increasing economic, political, and cultural interdependence of all nations requires a greater understanding of the world in which we live. The ability to communicate in a language other than English is an important component of a global perspective as language is our connection to our community and to the world. Learning a second language provides a unique opportunity to gain access to other people and other cultures. It is the department's philosophy that all students should study foreign languages during their school careers in order to communicate effectively in our interdependent world. In addition, students may eventually choose a career in which the ability to communicate in a second language will be a key asset. An additional benefit of learning a new language is the opportunity for students to learn about a new culture. These experiences serve to enhance a student's understanding and appreciation of his/her own culture as well as the culture of others.

The World Language course of study at the Bellport Middle School serves as an introduction to the Regents with Advanced Designation Diploma sequence and fulfills the New York State Regents Diploma Requirement.
