BMS Math

Math 6  (M6):  1.0 Unit

This course follows the standards outlined by the NYS Learning Standards for Math. Instructional time will focus on five areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; (4) deepening understanding of area, surface area and volume; and (5) developing understanding of simple probabilities and statistical thinking. Requirements include:  homework, quizzes, tests, projects, mid-year formative assessment, final exam and NYS assessment. 

 WIN (Whatever I Need)

This course meets every other day and acts as a supplement to the Math 6 course. In the course, students will continue working on current mathematics concepts, and will receive instructional experiences that provide extra practice, remediation, or enrichment in mathematics as determined by student performance.

Math 7  (M7):  1.0 Unit

This course follows the standards outlined by the NYS Learning Standards for Math. Instructional time will focus on three areas: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; and (3) drawing inferences about populations based on samples.  Requirements include: homework, weekly quizzes, unit tests, quarterly exams, mid-term exam, final exam, projects, and the NYS Math assessment.

Math 7 Accelerated (M7A):  1.0 Unit

This course follows the standards outlined by the NYS Learning Standards for Math. This course is designed for students with outstanding math aptitude and work ethic and will prepare students to take Algebra I Honors in Eighth Grade.  Instructional time will focus on these areas: developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; drawing inferences about populations based on samples; formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem. Requirements include:  homework, weekly quizzes, unit tests, quarterly exams, final exam, projects, and the NYS Math assessment.

Prerequisite: Exemplary scores on NWEA Mathematics assessments, NYS Math assessment, course report cards, and screening assessment in Math 6.

Math 8 (M8):  1.0 Unit

This course follows the standards outlined by the NYS Learning Standards for Math. Instructional time will focus on three areas: (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; (3) analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.  Requirements include: homework, quizzes, unit tests, benchmark assessments, projects, and the NYS Math assessment.

Algebra I (C371):  1.0 Unit 

This course follows the standards outlined by the NYS Learning Standards for Math. This is a high school level course which culminates with the NYS Common Core Algebra I Regents.  Students will develop skills and processes to be applied to problem solving in a variety of settings including:  linear equations, quadratic functions, absolute value and exponential functions, coordinate geometry, system of equations, data analysis, right triangle trigonometry and probability.  Requirements include:  homework, quizzes, tests, quarterly assessments, final exam.  These students are exempt from the NYS Math assessment. Successful completion of this course with a minimum grade of 65, and successful completion of the associated Regents Exam of 65, will result in 1.0 high school credits in mathematics.

Please note, this course is a high school level course. This course's final grade and if applicable, associated Regents exam, will be posted to the student's permanent high school transcript. The final course grade earned for this course will be calculated into a student's overall high school cumulative grade point average and credits earned may be used towards graduation requirements.
