8th Grade Life Science (Sci8B): 1.0 Unit
This course follows the standards outlined by the NYS P-12 New York State Science Learning Standards. The course is designed for students who previously took Physical Science in 7th Grade. In the course, students will study Life Science. Instructional time will focus on these areas: Microbiomes; Metabolism; Traits and Reproduction; Populations and Resources; Matter and Energy in Ecosystems; Evolutionary History; and Natural Selection. In addition, students prepare for and are administered a NYS Science assessment which includes a laboratory practical and written test. This encompasses all science from 5th grade to present learning. Requirements include homework assignments, projects, tests, quizzes, labs, quarterly assessments, mid-term exam, final exam, and participation.
Biology (D404): 1.0 Units This course follows the standards outlined by the NYS P-12 New York State Science Learning Standards and adheres to the Regents-level Living Environment curriculum. The course explores the following topics: the unity and diversity among living things; the maintenance of life in animals and plants; human physiology; reproduction and development; genetics; evolution; and ecology. Successful students will exhibit good skills in reading and writing. Requirements include homework assignments, projects, tests, quizzes, labs, quarterly assessments, mid-term exam, final exam, and participation. Written lab reports are required and their successful completion is a prerequisite for taking both the mid-term and Regents exams. This course can be used to fulfill the Living Environment course requirement for a HS Regents diploma. In addition, students prepare for and are administered a New York State Science Assessment which includes a laboratory practical and a written test. This encompasses all science from 5th grade to present learning. Successful completion of this course with a minimum grade of 65, and successful completion of the associated Regents Exam of 65, will result in 1.0 high school credits in science. Please note, this course is a high school level course. This course's final grade and if applicable, associated Regents exam, will be posted to the student's permanent high school transcript. The final course grade earned for this course will be calculated into a student's overall high school cumulative grade point average and credits earned may be used towards graduation requirements.
